Yass Queen! Our Woman Crush Wednesday this week is Queen Latifah!
The first hip-hop artist to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Queen Latifah is an inspiration to women everywhere. Her confidence and strength of personality has been apparent throughout her musical career, acting career, and personal life.
From her Oscar-nominated role in Chicago, to her TV hit Living Single, to her Grammy winning rap hits, to her artist management company, this Queen rules with grace and style. She has released 7 albums, acted in 63 films and television shows, and won 21 awards (so far) after starting her career as a rap artist at age 17.
Her stage name, Latifah, means delicate and sensitive in Arabic. Born Dana Elaine Owens, she chose the nickname for herself out of a book at age 8 and added “Queen” later to set herself apart. Why be an MC when you can be royalty, after all? And royalty she has been, rapping about issues for African American women and standing up for what she believes in.
“I wish every woman would love herself and embrace what she was given naturally.”
